Saturday 13th to Monday 15th May, Kefalos, Kos

With a building wind we had a good sail around the western end of Kos and round into the sheltered anchorage at Kefalos. Although lesson learnt! reef the sails more in building winds. As we rounded the western end of Kos, winds started gusting up to 30 knots, and we still had a full main out. As we came into the anchorage, and began furling the genoa, sheets slammed a few times on the spray hood windscreen but luckily didn’t smash the glass.
Saturday afternoon and Sunday was a bit too windy to venture ashore in the tender. Ann used the time to hand sew some extra material onto the interior hatch shade (9 hours later it was done). On Monday we did stretch our legs and walked up to Kefalos village, visiting a restored working mill complete with herb garden, donkey threshing area (the donkeys walk round in a circle and tread on the wheat to thresh it) and an excellent miller’s family home. During the war the Italians took over and built an escape tunnel and shooting turret which is now a cafe overlooking the bay. We were offered a local cinnamon drink and an appetiser to show off the bread that is made from the mill. Further along you can visit a castle ruin.
We then watched Bernard Smyth’s (an old sailing friend) funeral on line, and got on our way again.
