Sunday 24th to Tuesday 26th May, Arkoi

Yet another great sail westward in the northerly winds 18 miles across to the small island of Arkoi (Arki) (pop 45). We’d been here last autumn and had to anchor in a neighbouring bay as the small harbour wall was full. Today, there were a few spaces, although a bit of a cross wind. Today Jacana was not going to let us down, so with a fair bit of reverse speed to match the wind and using the dropping anchor to snub the bow wandering off in the cross wind, we successfully got on the quay in one attempt!
The small village has 2 tavernas, a cafe and a boutique and some picturesque walks.
Next to us were Julian and Helen on Quintet, who we invited on board for a pre dinner drink and dined with them in Manoli’s (a common name in these parts) taverna whose wife, Caterine, is from the Ukraine but has been here 30 years and is an excellent cook. She recommended the onion and cheese pie, fab. The previous night we were treated to her artichoke and pea meze. And her lemon cheesecake was delightful with a crunchy but moist base (on the house, of course). Great background music too including Pink Floyd.
Since launch, we’ve been loitering a bit, awaiting the arrival of Fern and Stew in Leros in early June, hence revisiting some of the islands we stopped at last year. Once they’ve gone, we’ll explore islands further south.
