Very little wind again so motored round the east side of Symi to the spectacular town of Symi, with its stunning neoclassical architecture clinging to the steep harbour sides. We’d been here years ago on a flotilla holiday where we moored using the traditional anchor drop and stern to. However, it was difficult as the harbour is naturally very deep. Now however the harbour has mooring buoys and a marino in a rib allocates you a bouy, ties a long line from the bow of your boat with a very large bowline loop and then using his rib nudges you as you reverse into your space, tying off the line on the bow when you’re still about a boat length off the quay. Without a bow thruster and with the bow tied it would be virtually impossible to reverse without the occasional sideways shove.
So a couple of days and nights in the bustle of Symi taking advantage of the beach to cool down in the almost airless and very hot harbour. Also up early on the second day to walk up the 500 steps of the Kali Strata to the citadel at the top to admire the harbour views.
