Wednesday 10th to Thursday 11th May, Poros Kefalonia to Zakinthos Town

Still overcast and chilly, but some wind today for the 20 odd mile passage further south to Zakinthos. Coupled with the wind was a largish beam on swell with the occasional 1m or so wave, making for an uncomfortable (as in Ann felt a little queasy) but fast sail with average speeds in excess of 7 knots for a while.

At Zakinthos we were greeted by Marinos helping with our lines and of course taking our cash! We were expecting this, and although these guys are official, they do charge for their services, €10 in fact and another €15 for harbour fees. But it did avoid us visiting the Port Officials and potentially having to explain why we haven’t got, and don’t need a transit log.

After a quick walk round the town centre, and dinner on board we indulged in a land train tour of the entire town. The castle and church on the hilltop will have to wait for another time.
Zakinthos was hit by a 7.3 richterscale earthquake in 1953 which devastated the town killing hundreds with only 3 buildings left standing. Many inhabitants left but those that remained rebuilt. In some of the buildings you can see hints of their old Venetian architecture – arches that somehow look too modern.
