Friday 6th September
As forecast the wind did drop, so before we left a chance for a quick bike ride round to Marseille Major Cathedral, built in the second half of the 1800s in neo Byzantine style. Most impressive was the entire floor of stunning mosaic with my estimate of in excess of 40 million colourful and intricately positioned tiles.
We left Marseille just after noon headed for Cassis, some 20 or so miles to the south east. With the wind at about 15kts, gusting 20plus, we had a good first sail since being remasted. Just before Cassis we furled the sails and explored 3 Calanques (creeks) the third of which offered mooring buoys, with lines ashore in very attractive and very sheltered surroundings so we decided to over night here. As Ann discovered, the swim ashore with a line was not pleasant, the creek being fed by a very cold spring.
