Monday 5th to Friday 9th July, Staveley, Cumbria

Whilst the Caravan and Camping club site was advertised as Windermere, the site was actually half way between Windermere and Kendal, about 2 miles from the village of Staveley, set in a beautiful, tiered and landscaped location (the owners live on t’site) with far reaching views across rolling green fields and moorland. The first day out saw us cycling up a gated and stoney track, across the lowlands into Staveley, with its small industrial estate housing a blind chocolatier selling expensive but delicious handmade chocolates, and the home of the Hawkshead brewery. Two hours later we had sampled its interesting…

Wednesday 30th June to Monday 5th July 2021, Barnard Castle

The site is about 2 miles to the west of Barnard Castle, adjacent to a farm, with yet more fields (paddocks?, what’s the difference?) of horses and a beautiful gorge walk through trees to the River Tees at Barnard Castle. So with brilliant weather forecast for the first full day, we cycled the 13 miles UP to the highest pub in the British Isles, the Tan Hill Inn, at a height of 1732ft above sea level for a very much needed pint of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. The route included a couple of miles along a steep dirt track across a…

Friday 25th to Wednesday 30th July, Scarborough

Despite the site being a couple of miles to the North of Scarborough, it was well served by buses and a convenient footpath to the coast. So while we were here, we walked into Scarborough, along North Bay, round the headland with Scarborough Castle to the very popular South Bay and bused it back. We caught a bus to Whitby, making use of my CSSC membership to get us into Whitby Abbey, and cycled into Scarborough a couple of times to visit its castle (again getting in free) and the really lovely Peasholme park, the home of the model naval…

Wednesday 23rd to Friday 25th June 2021, Brownhills, Newark

This is where we bought our motorhome and had booked it in to have some very minor ‘snags’ fixed, such as a sticky blind, a cracked battery cover door and the inner frame of the garage door coming away from the door. And what a great stop despite being only a stone’s throw from the A1. Firstly the stop was free (a big tick), a free meal when we arrived (via a voucher), all facilities including showers, a swimming pool, jacuzzi, and sauna (although the sauna was unfortunately closed), and a short cycle ride into historic Newark with its old…

Tuesday 22nd to Wednesday 23rd June, Spixworth

Owing to the West Runton being full (apparently) a chance to catch up with my brother David and his wife Muriel and park on their drive for the night and enjoy a few bottles of local ale and a great roast dinner. A great stop, with free shore power and all the facilities! Also visited the nearby crematorium.

Wednesday 16th to Tuesday 22nd July, West Runton, Norfolk

Ann’s belief that Norfolk is flat was dispelled as we descended the fairly steep, 3/4 mile ling track through pine trees and flowering rhododendron trees to the secluded motorhome site at West Runton. It was hot and sunny when we arrived, so much so that Ann even went for a dip in the sea, about a mile from the site. It was definitely too cold for me. We had a great stop here, on Thursday, David (my brother) and Muriel met us and took us along the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of the North Norfolk coast to Wells-next-the Sea,…

Saturday 12th to Wednesday 16th June 2021, Tolleshunt D’Arcy, Essex

What a contrast from Bognor, a small site with only 3-4 others at the back of a riding stable. The only noise disruption being the dawn chorus with a rather loud and very persistent cuckoo, and the neighing of the two horses behind us dressed in Essex zebra bling! (yes, as zebras, see photo below) And what a great location, a pub and Indian restaurant only a few minutes walk away. So it was a chance to get on the bikes and explore the quiet and nearby countryside and towns. On Sunday we ventured just a couple of miles down…

Tuesday 8th to Saturday 12th June 2021, Bognor Regis

Well what is there to say about Bognor, the actual camp site was OK, the town OK although a bit run down in parts, the beach OK, BUT the location of camp site was sandwiched between a very busy road, with boy racers seemingly driving hell for leather all through the night, and an Aldi building site working all through the day. So not a lot of sleep was had! The site, was however convenient for 3 supermarkets and a very professional hair dresser, Lucas, at Head & Jones a 20 min walk away, where Ann had a head and…

Friday 4th to Tuesday 8th June 2021, Netley Abbey

This time a camp site only 10 mins walk from Fern. So Friday night we were entertained to a Bbq at Ferns with some excellent cooked meats and real ale, and excellent company with Bob and Flick. It does however remain a mystery how we managed to walk back across a field, negotiating 2 styles, with horses in the pitch darkness of 2am! We just remember there was lots of laughter🤣 It was a busy weekend and on Saturday we went sailing (motoring) in Wini, with Fern and Tommy in their 23ft sailing boat, up Southampton water and back to…

Tuesday 1st to Friday 4th June 2021 Sway, near Lymington

This was a great location and definitely worth a return visit sometime, just 3 other caravans, on a large flat field, only a couple of miles from Lymington, and the weather was reasonable. So after stocking up with victuals (can’t get away from nautical speak) in Dorchester we eventually found the site down some very narrow lanes, making the mistake of relying totally on the satnav instead of a bit of route planning to maximise use of A roads. But at least the building supply lorry was happy to reverse! A chance then to do a bit of shopping in…
