Monday 5th to Friday 9th July, Staveley, Cumbria

Whilst the Caravan and Camping club site was advertised as Windermere, the site was actually half way between Windermere and Kendal, about 2 miles from the village of Staveley, set in a beautiful, tiered and landscaped location (the owners live on t’site) with far reaching views across rolling green fields and moorland. The first day out saw us cycling up a gated and stoney track, across the lowlands into Staveley, with its small industrial estate housing a blind chocolatier selling expensive but delicious handmade chocolates, and the home of the Hawkshead brewery. Two hours later we had sampled its interesting range of cask beers (Gold being my favourite and Mosaic was Ann’s) then cycled back. Wednesday saw us cycling again but this time into Windermere with the intention of getting on the water in a rowing boat. Unfortunately for reasons unknown (possibly Covid, or more likely staff shortages) the rowing boats were locked up. (Quite a few cafes were shut owing to staff shortages) . Then on Thursday we walked all day, enjoying lowland views and beautiful countryside. Ann enjoyed a swim at the top of the hill in Gurnal Dubs tarn so that was a first for her and a tick in the box. Then we had our picnic by the tarn and lay there listening to the birds for a while, idyllic.
