Saturday 12th to Wednesday 16th June 2021, Tolleshunt D’Arcy, Essex

What a contrast from Bognor, a small site with only 3-4 others at the back of a riding stable. The only noise disruption being the dawn chorus with a rather loud and very persistent cuckoo, and the neighing of the two horses behind us dressed in Essex zebra bling! (yes, as zebras, see photo below) And what a great location, a pub and Indian restaurant only a few minutes walk away. So it was a chance to get on the bikes and explore the quiet and nearby countryside and towns. On Sunday we ventured just a couple of miles down the leafy lanes to the village of Tollesbury, with its Marina into the tidal waters of the River Blackwater, and drying mud offering moorings for old and even older boats. We even ventured into the welcoming local sailing club for a very refreshing drink. Monday, we cycled slightly further to the small town of Tiptree, the home of the famous jam factory, where, at mid morning we found time for a very filling cream tea! Tuesday was the turn of a ride to Maldon, where on route and at low tide (0930) we had planned to cycle across a causeway to the small island of Osea, but was presented with a barrier and threatening signs of prosecution if we ventured further. However this disappointment was made up for by visiting Heybridge Basin just a mile further with its lock gates – we have been deprived of lock gates for nearly 2 years – a tea shop and a canal! offering a beautiful flat cycle ride into Maldon with its historic barges, lovely estuary side park and church. I mentioned the Indian restaurant above, on Monday evening we enjoyed a very substantial meal, of 4 courses for just £11.95 each. A genuine bargain!
