Saturday 24th to Thursday 29th May, Skiathos

With strong north westerlies forecast on Sunday we needed shelter in Skiathos harbour, the only option available being a few, stern to slots, with anchor (no lazy lines) on the north side of the floating pontoon, not ideal given the forecast wind direction (N) but arguably better than anchoring in one of the nearby bays with thick weed and notoriously poor holding.
The season still hasn’t started in earnest and much of the mooring space in Skiathos was taken up with unchartered sailing boats.
Fern and her boyfriend Stu are coming to Skiathos in a couple of weeks so being land bound for a few days gives us the opportunity to explore the beautiful narrow streets of the town, and take a bus to a monastery.
The wind started picking up Saturday night, and by Sunday morning it was necessary to get in the dinghy and lay a second anchor, and just as well, as Sunday afternoon saw gusts in excess of 40knots. Victor, a Dutch sailor next to us who lives in Volos, needed to borrow our plank as he was bows to and couldn’t get off his boat in the strong winds. These winds eventually abated on Monday afternoon.
Then we discovered that Mandy and Kev were arriving in Skiathos on Tuesday, (with Rob and Sue (Kev’s sister)) who we hadn’t seen since last September, so the chance to catch up, over a delicious Indian Curry at Little India. The Dansak was very good although the Tikka Masala too sweet. Wednesday’s winds were again unfavourable and we eventually escaped Skiathos on Thursday morning.
At slightly over €6 a night, Skiathos was well worth the stop.
A quick word about the weather. It’s still generally still unsettled, with day time temperatures barely reaching 20°, and evenings requiring long trousers and long sleeves.
