We left Buffalo Bay after lunch and actually managed a decent sail with well reefed sails in the 20-30kt northerly along the coast towards Karavos. Things changed once we rounded the headland in sight of Karavos and the final 4 miles were again motoring against 4′ waves and strong winds. Anchoring for some reason this time proved to be difficult, and after 5 attempts we finally got the anchor to hold. We’ve been here twice before, and last time we managed to get some English bacon in Lidl. No such luck this time however!. So a couple of nights here, and with food deliberately running low, two evening meals in a really friendly and cheap Taverna where all the locals go.
It was also time for the annual engine oil and oil filter change, always a very messy job given the location of the filter, together with changing the two fuel filters. Jacana also has a small manual pump in the engine bay to draw off any water from the bottom of the main fuel tank. I’ve never used it until today, what came out, wasn’t water, instead fuel with specks of brownish purple sludge. We have the dreaded diesel bug.
