We had a decision to make. The forecast was for F5/6 gusting F7 from the north for several days ahead, and we need to go north! In the end we decided to give it a go, knowing that there were a few places to shelter up the western side of the Evia channel, or if really bad then we could always return to Sounion. The forecast was accurate and with 4 to 6 foot waves breaking over the bow and cockpit and 20 to 25kt winds on the bow gusting 30kt we motored slowly north and made the 15 mile, 5 hour uncomfortable passage, to anchor in the welcome shelter of Porto Rafti. With no let up in the forecast, and despite being protected from the north and with continuing 20-30kt gusts, we had no choice but to stay put. On Monday we did venture ashore for some provisions and lunch, and a wet tender ride back to Jacana. On Tuesday we ventured ashore again, this time mainly taking in the northern side of the harbour and were immediately surprised by the myriad of tavernas and bars and very pleasant swimming areas, all sheltered from the cold north winds. It was like a completely different town! The trees surrounding the seated outdoor areas and 3 storey flats seemed to be the answer to such calm.
There was seemingly a slight reduction in the northerly wind strength on Wednesday, so we prepared for an early start.
