It was dead calm as we motored out of Poros bay, round the top of Methana and across to the mainland at New Epidavros for a couple of nights stern to on the harbour wall. It was also the opportunity to get the bikes out and cycle up to the castle on the hill. A pretty, if rather delapidated, village with winding narrow lanes lead you up some very steep lanes to the Byzantine castle ruins. This is the actual village of New Epidavros, affording magnificent views down to the harbour and along the coastline. We discovered a delightful cafĂ© and sat down to wait for Caterina, the waitress, to return from shopping (we were reliably informed by the chap at the next table) before ordering fresh orange juice to quench our thirsts. On the way back we stopped at a supermarket and managed to find some decaf coffee at last! Two nights was enough though, as despite on the first night, the wind was blowing off the land and no wind the second night, there was a constant wave surge entering the harbour, causing our mooring springs to squeak all night. Furthermore it’s always stressful in the afternoon as charter boats squeeze in, with little idea of what they’re doing. However, they were very friendly, one German group and one Polish. We even got entertained in the evening with some of the muscle-bound men trying to do yoga on the quay.
