Thursday 2nd to Tuesday 7th May, Big Vathi, Itheka

This weekend is Easter in Greece together with May day holiday moved to Tuesday, and we didn’t know what to expect with shop and Taverna opening hours. Furthermore, F6 and F7 winds were forecast for Saturday afternoon and night, so we made the easy decision to go to Big Vathi and stock up with fresh meat and veg on Thursday and get a reasonable sheltered spot on the wall.
No Lambrini to take our money for mooring fees any more – Spiros and Anna who own the Taverna Karamela told us she was fed up with people who were not nice and wouldn’t pay. But true to form, Spiros was displaying a new t- shirt, see photo.
Apparently Easter means big celebrations in Greece, but not in Vathi, all we saw was a procession past Jacana on Good Friday evening, went up to the church on the hill at 11pm on Saturday to the candle lighting then on Easter Sunday we heard several fire crackers and saw several families sharing a pit roasted lamb in their gardens on our walk up to Perachori – 15000 steps.
Saturday’s storm came and went, and we were able to tie a line from our bow to a large cat sideways on the protruding wall, which kept the bow in place, although it did get a bit choppy and sloppy at times. The helpful Belgian chap on the boat between us kindly lowered his anchor so our rope wasn’t rubbing on it.
The weather cleared on Sunday so we took a long walk to the village of Perachori overlooking Vathi, where the 2 tavernas were unfortunately shut and on Monday another long walk to Gidaki beach (5 and a half miles) passing through steep forested pathways (the sea is still far too cold to go for a dip).
Also in Vathi we met up a couple of times for drinks with Miles and Sarah, a Canadian couple on Nellebelle, and helped Miles pay his Tepai (cruising tax). We’d previously met them last year going round the Peloponese. They invited us to a cafe in town to meet the fish farm owners they worked for years ago. Nicos and Tasia treated us to coffee and apple cake, yum.
