Wednesday 5th to Friday 7th July, Old Epidavros (Epidaurus)

A slow sail for the 6 miles south to Old Epidavros, a delightful and well protected harbour. We could have anchored but decided to go stern to onto the harbour wall, to make use of any available free water tap! Lots to see here, including a small roman amphitheatre and a sunken roman ‘city’ (actually a few buildings) just a couple of metres deep in the (now reasonably warm) sea.

Someone on Navily recommended shopping in the little “Athina Ecofarm” kitchen shop within the nearby Taverna. Since ancient Greek times the area has been known for its rich soil and herbal, healing remedies and foodstuffs. We were enchanted by the tastings and warm salesmanship of the owner and came away with a bag of goodies. Kalamata olives in sea water, beeswax and olive oil eye ointment, one with added lavender for the skin (also good for bites), marinaded orange segments, apricot jam which had an energizing zing, kumquats and orange and grapefruit jam. We’ll be back for the tasty molasses next week. The town also has a lovely shaded beach just round the corner.

Fern is with us next week and this is definitely a place we’ll come back to, as a half hour bus ride takes you to the large Epidaurus amphitheatre, built in the 4th century BC, accommodating over 13000 people with perfect acoustics. More next week!
