Sunday 18th to Sunday 25th September, Vliho, Nidri, Sivota, Big Vathi and Kioni

From Vliho we headed out to sea to empty the holding tank, and returned to the fuel station just north of Nidri to top up with Diesel (135 litres at €1.99) and then tied up on the IBA pontoon to continue to watch the Queen’s funeral. We’d booked 2 nights on IBA although ended up staying an additional one to get a few jobs sorted. So no more running out of anchor chain with now 80m of chain and Dimitri fitted the stainless steel bracket and welded a couple of loops and a cleat on the gantry for our new fancy passerelle (folding aluminium ‘plank’). Also our fridge has been heavily draining our house batteries overnight so we managed to get Vernon from Stiff Nipples to take a look who diagnosed a faulty thermostat. He’s going to order another thermostat once he’s got enough orders for the courier and then he’ll do it next year. On the Monday night we actually enjoyed a gyro (wrap filled with meat, salad and chips) each at Stathis taverna washed down with wine for less than €10, and on Tuesday we tried out the Indian and Thai curries at the Familia taverna again in Nidri. The extra day on the pontoon also gave us the opportunity to walk the 4 or so miles upto the Nidri waterfall and back, which despite the lack of rain for the past several weeks did have a little water flowing over it.
Onwards then to Sivota for Thursday night where a really excellent Bulgarian trio entertained us from the neighbouring taverna with classic British Rock songs – (we watched while reclining on Jacana). Then anchored overnight in Big Vathi harbour, boarded the dinghy and rowed over and bought a mastic gun and 2 new pairs of goggles that we were allowed to try on first. Had a lovely meal at a family run taverna called Locals Kouzina. Then Saturday and Sunday nights on the wall at Kioni on Ithika. Had a walk up the hill but our cafe was closed, so we wandered further around the pretty hamlet visiting an old mill. We were going to have a drink by the water’s edge but it was a very chilly wind once the sun set.
The weather definitely changed this week with evenings now needing trousers and long sleeves. Hopefully it will warm up again in a few days.
