Wednesday 15th to Wednesday 23rd June, A week with Fern

A brilliant week doing some of the many highlights of the southern Ionian. We started at Preveza, went through the Lefkas Canal to Sivota, then Frikes on Itheka, Kalamos, Kastos, Port Athini on Meganisi and finally Lefkas. We even managed a bit of sailing, some fishing in which Ann didn’t get a bite, Paul caught one but Fern caught two! Spent the time eating excellent food and of course, drinking! As we approached Kastos, we could see smoke rising from one of the hills. Fortunately as we entered the harbour we found the only space, and after 3 attempts, and with a large gullet packed with holiday makers watching us, managed to successfully moor up. For some reason our anchor chain shrinks when we enter Kastos with guests (we had a similar problem with David and Yvonne in Kastos last year!) and twice we got within 10m on the wall only to come to a stop. However, just as we tied off, a landing craft, probably from the second world war, entered the harbour with sirens blasting and unloaded 3 fire trucks on the beach opposite us, which then headed off to the fire. Chatting with the Windmill taverna owner later, this is apparently a fairly regular occurrence, as it was a land fill rubbish dump on fire, ignited probably by a piece of glass. Anyway, it gave Fern the opportunity to chat with the young hunky uniformed firemen later in the evening at El.A’s bar. Below are some of the many photos recording the week.
The firemen arrive (slowly!)
And 3 fire engines head out to the fire, slowly!
