Monday 27th July, Porta del Greco

A day of being a tourist, so started with a very short train ride of one stop from the station very close to the harbour to Herculaneum, which befell the same fate as Pompeii in AD79 with the eruption of Vesuvius, but is apparently better preserved. Then on to Vesuvius and its crater, via bus to almost the top with a very dusty scramble up for the last 900 metres to the crater edge and what a magnificent spectical and stunning views. Well worth the efforts made! And it wasn’t straight forward using public transport with a combination of Google telling us the incorrect station to catch the vesuvian express, and the fact that we should have booked vesuvius park tickets in advance, but we did eventually make it.
