Over night, we were the only boat at anchor and with only 12 miles to go today, we took things easy this morning, with a tour round the crater in the dinghy. However we were rudely awaken at about 0745 with 10 mins of very loud bang and flashes from the shore. It looked and sounded like a firework display composed just of white flashes and bangs. We have no idea what was going on, on a July Sunday morning.
Just as the small boats left last night as the sun set, this morning, a near continuous flotilla of motor boats arrived, anchoring all around us. By the time we raised anchor at 1 o’clock we were surrounded by over 100 boats, for the 3 hour short sail across the Bay of Naples to the slightly run down marina at Torre del Greco sitting in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.
