Yet another windless day, although it did pick up slightly during the day allowing us a fairly speedy motor sailing passage at close to 7kn with the wind almost behind us and the genoa out. We passed close to the Isola di Giglio, and the spot where the Concordia hit rocks killing over 30 people a few years back . All remains of the vessel have since been removed.
Onwards then to the small island of Giannutri, about 6 miles to the south east of Giglio. However about half way between the two, splutter splutter and the engine stopped. We quickly established that we had run out of fuel! We have two 165 litre fuel tanks, and I had assumed that the upper one drained under gravity to the lower one, which it does when the appropriate valve is open! So I spent the next 20 minutes sweating profusely over a hot engine bleeding air from the diesel lines and injectors until the engine spluttered back into life. Half an hour later however we anchored up in a very sheltered bay on the Isola di Giannutri. Time for a snorkel, check out the anchor and the inquisitive and abundant fish.
Very strangely, Google Maps thinks we’re in Monaco, we must have taken a wrong turn somewhere, although more likely something to do with the 2 super yachts anchored nearby.
