Thursday 15th August
Time to move South again, so we left the marina, left the Saone and came across by far the biggest lock so far (Pierre Benite), at 180m long, 12m wide, but with a drop of nearly 12m. Fortunately, this and the remaining Rhone locks have floating bollards, so no need for very long mooring lines. At the lock we were given a couple of pamphlets outlining safety and navigation issues on the river together with phone numbers and vhf channels for each of the locks. The lock experience was very simple compared with many of the earlier locks with no turbulence as we dropped the 39 feet to the next level. Another lock later we moored up on the inside of a sheltered pontoon at Ampuis.
