Saturday 20th July
This is it, the day we went over the top! 2 locks up took us to 340m (1100 feet) above sea level to the watershed between the Marne and Saone rivers and the 4.8km Ballesmes Tunnel. So after getting permission from the canal control lady, we entered the narrow tunnel and eventually after a lot of concentration and careful steering we re-emerged in daylight an hour later. Once out we immediately started descending through a chain of eight 5m locks and three slightly smaller locks. Tied up at a remote and very shady spot just outside the small village of Piepape. (292m)
