Day 77 and 78 Langres

Thursday 18 and Friday 19 July

We decided to spend a couple of days exploring the lovely (in the top 50 towns apparently) walled and elevated town of Langres, with its complete limestone walls and defensive turrets, the town boasts never having been taken by any adversaries in its entire history. One of its gates dates back to 2BC. Like most French towns, Langres has a magnificent cathedral, dating from the 12th century and these days is famous for its very garish roof tiles. Langres was also the birth place of Diderot the famous? French philosopher and houses a museum celebrating his significant achievements including writing a vast encyclopedia. Well worth a stop off for a couple of days. Onwards and upwards tomorrow.
