Tuesday 9th July
We decided to make for Froncles rather than overnighting at a picnic stop, so just 10 miles but 9 locks. All went well in the morning so stopped for lunch at Donjeux, then in the afternoon one lock was linked to a lifting bridge. Unfortunately, as the bridge lifted, 3 children decided to lay on it as it raised. Fortunately for them, but unfortunately for us, the bridge stopped halfway, blocking us in the lock, and several lorries and cars from crossing the canal. Eventually after about half an hour, the VNF engineer turned up and she reset the system. Later than planned we arrived at Froncles for a couple of nights.
A few of today's locks lifted us nearly 4 metres, which is too high, even with a long boat hook to get a line round bollards at the top of the lock. Fortunately these locks also had bollards about 1.5 metres from the top, making life a bit easier.
