Thursday 1st to Saturday 3rd October, Ormos Egialis, Amorgos

Off at dawn to try to beat the worst of the day’s Meltemi, heading west again as far as possible. Well we managed 25 miles again, with well reefed sails before we agreed that we’d had enough of the now, 2 – 3 metre swell and the continuing 20 to 30 knot wind from the north. Ann again spent 3 hours looking in the bottom of a bucket.
So we settled for anchoring off Ormos Egialis on Amorgos, a large bay sheltered from the bulk of the Meltemi. It was reasonably OK until sunset when the swell started to enter the bay, and was it a swell!, particularly with Jacana swinging in all directions. After virtually no sleep, we woke on Friday to a F9 wind warning on our phones, so no sailing today. The swell continued throughout the day, so much so, that we considered it too dangerous to get in the tender and go ashore. So another night of sleeping in a ‘concrete mixer’, although by Saturday morning the swell had subsided slightly and we did venture ashore to the Pharmacy to get effective sea sickness tablets. The ones we had on board turned out to be ginger extract and totally useless.

On the plus side, Amorgos did look like a beautiful island with limited tourism and definitely a place we will revisit.
So a late morning start, again battling the Meltemi. Only 150 miles to Almira!
