Yet another windy weekend forecast so we sheltered stern to, on the Town Quay in Lakki. What a strange place, Lakki isn’t a bit like any other Greek town we’ve encountered, it’s architecture is a mixture of Italian Art Deco and Rationalist, with curved walls, arches and balconies. Apparently it stems from the period 1912 to 1943 when Leros was run by Italians after the Italo-Turkish war. Mussolini had the marsh land drained and his own Italian architects brought here so he could build a town in his favourite styles. Subsequently it was taken by the Germans at the WW2 Battle of Leros in 1943 until the end of the war.
So time to service the engine and explore on foot the area. Of particular interest was a museum dedicated to the Battle of Leros housed in tunnels built by the Italians to store munitions. We stayed in Lakki a few days and it grew on us. It has a good fresh fruit and vegetable shop, a supermarket, 3 butchers an excellent bakery/café both a little walk from the main drag. A large hardware store, a canvas man who is going to give us a quote for a new bimini, hatch covers and reinforcing the spray hood oh, and loads of good tavernas. We befriended Alison and Dean on Silver Witch and were invited over for drinks.
