Monday 8th to Thursday 11th September, Myrina, Lyimnos

We raised anchor at 0600 for the 63 mile, 12 hour crossing to the istand of Limnos and the beautiful small town of Myrina. Unfortunately the wind was more on the bow than forecast, although we did manage to sail about a third of the crossing, in a reasonable calm sea. The first night we anchored in the sheltered bay, moving to the harbour wall the following morning for convenience of getting ashore and to top up the water tanks.
The town of Myrina boasts a narrow and very pretty pedestrianised main shopping street plus the usual coffee shops, restaurants, bars etc, but the real highlight was very few tourists. Also overlooking the harbour is an imposing Venetian castle ruin, complete with shaggy goats and a herd of deer.
We met up with a Canadian couple, Rob and Debbie on Morning Star, enjoying a drink aboard their boat on the first evening.
One evening on the harbour wall, we encountered a sight we’d never seen before, about a hundred small fish jumping out of the water onto the pontoon, very bizarre, presumably being chased by bigger fish. The local cat ate well!, despite people kicking them back in. And the other sight we’d never seen in Greece, a lifeboat!, looking very much like an RNLI boat.
Unfortunately with the need to continue pressing south, we only stayed on the island for 3 nights.
